The ladies of Union and Midway went toe to toe on the basketball court in Raider Country Wednesday night. The Raiders fought hard against persistent Spartans, and prevailed in the end, 44-33.

The first quarter was a warm up for both teams, with Midway scoring 7 points and Union scoring 4. However, the ball really got rolling in the second, with the Lady Raiders tacking on 15 points to their score, while Union added 9 of their own. The halftime score was 22-13, the Raiders with the lead. After a trip to the locker rooms, the battle continued between the two rivals, leading to a third quarter score of 32-36, the Spartans still trailing behind. Midway finished with 12 points in the fourth, and held Union to only score 7. The Lady Raiders came through with the win, 44-33.

Head coach for Midway, Coach Jennifer Naylor, said, “Hats off to Union, we did not take care of the basketball that well, we had 18 turnovers, and they did a great job of capitalizing on that. Morgan Tew and Amber Poole just really capitalized during key moments in the game tonight. Amber Poole was 3 for 4 at the three point line tonight, and Morgan Tew hit two lay ups that really brought some momentum and sealed the deal for us.”

Leading the scoring for the Lady Raiders was Amber Poole with 14 points, Taylor Faircloth with 9 points, Morgan Tew with 6 points.

Union’s head coach, Coach Bryant Register, said, “I’m very proud of our young ladies tonight, the way they competed and played was outstanding. I told them in the locker room that overall this was probably the best we’ve looked all season. Usually, we’ve been a little inconsistent, but I thought we put four solid quarters together tonight and we’re making progress. We’re really starting to grasp what we’re trying to do, and I hope that carries over into the second half of the season.”

Leading scorers for Union were Destiny Robinson with 14 points, Eva Long with 9 points, Shiquilla Walker with 6 points.

Both teams will be traveling for their conference games Friday night. Union will take on West Bladen while Midway will face East Bladen.
