The Hobbton Wildcats played a much better game Friday night than they did in their opener against Midway last; however, they still came up short, 39-18 against S. E. Halifax.
Wildcat coach Jeff Byrd said, “They played with a lot of heart today. We didn’t lay down. We lost 3 turnovers and they scored on all three. In the first half, I thought the defense played great. The offense just couldn’t capitalize. We had a pick and a fumble and they scored. We moved the ball pretty good. We have to get in better shape. We have so many going both ways we’re tired and it shows. We showed improvement from last week and that’s what we are trying to do.”
The first quarter was fairly even with neither team getting close. In the second quarter, the Wildcats began to make mistakes. In the last 6 minutes of the half, Halifax scored 3 times. Two of those were off Wildcat mistakes, a lost fumble and an interception.
The Wildcats came back from the break fired up and immediately marched 62 yards for a score with 10:25 left in the third quarter. Gregory Herring sneaked in from 1 yard out on fourth down. The point after failed on an incomplete pass. The score was 20-6.
Halifax answered with another score. However, the Wildcats came right back, aided by a couple of Halifax penalties, and scored on a 3-yard pass from Logan Langston to Johnnie Knowles. The point after kick hit the upright and bounced back on the field.
Early in the final period, Herring picked off a Halifax pass. However, on first down the running back fumbled the ball back to Halifax in good field position.
The Wildcats’ final score came with 6:26 left in the game when Marque Surles bulled his way through the middle for a 13-yard scoring run. The point after failed on a run.
For the Wildcats, Herring had 2 carries for 16 yards and a touchdown. Surles had 54 yards on 14 carries and 1 touchdown. Raequan Bryant carried 18 times for 152 yards. The Wildcats had 249 yards on 47 attempts.
The Wildcats are now 0-2 on the season. Next week they have an open date.
