Lakewood’s junior varsity football team suffered their first loss of the season against 2A North Johnston, 13-12 on Thursday.
With less than 2 minutes off the scoreboard in the first quarter, Leopard Dillion Kinlock rushed into the end zone from 4 yards out for the first TD of the night, but the extra point kick failed.
North Johnston retaliated about five minutes later with 1 yard rush by quarterback Dallas Krob that tied the score at 6-all. Their extra point kick failed also.
To begin the second quarter the Leopards scored again with 10:11 left on the board. A 3-yard run by Akili Underwood moved the Leopards up by 6 points for a 6-12 score. The extra point kick failed.
With 8:42 showing on the scoreboard, North Johnston’s Jahvonte Dublin raced into the end zone from 33 yards out to tie the score, and this time the extra point kick made it through the uprights to give the 2A Panthers the go-ahead point for a final score of 13-12.
Kinlock led all rushing with 21 carries for 146 yards. Underwood had 4 for 25 yards. For the Panthers, Dublin had 11 carries for 82 yards.
The Leopards had no passing stats. Panther quarterback Dallas Krob threw 13 times with 7 completions for 83 yards and no interceptions.
On defense for the Leopards, Ethan Blackwell had 8 tackles, and 2 were for lost yardage. Trevon Wilson had 3 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries; James Herring, 3 tackles and 1 sack for a 10 yard loss; Jody Conrad, 3 tackles.
Lakewood’s junior varsity falls to 4-1 overall. They will travel to Spring Creek next Thursday for the team’s first look at their new 1A Carolina Conference competition.
