The bridge on Sampson’s Bradshaw Road (SR 1817) that crosses over Ward Swamp is yet another in the county undergoing maintenance.
Beginning next week, on Monday, Sept. 23, at 8 a.m. both lanes of Bradshaw Road — located one mile north of Share Cake Road/ JCT SR 1818 near Vann Crossroads — are scheduled to be closed for two weeks through Friday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m.
“Their replacing the bulkheads under the bridge and the wing walls,” said local DOT district engineer Lin Reynolds, recalling that deteriorated wood bulkheads were also recently replaced on the Emmet Thornton Road bridge.
“It’s really about the simplest thing they do,” said Reynolds previously about the work involved in replacing rotten bulkheads with new treated timber. “They’re not having to replace pilings or anything major like that.”
“The wing walls are really the same thing (as the bulkheads) but they’re not under the bridge; they’re out to the side. Both hold dirt back,” Reynolds explained.
DOT officials do not expect this bridge maintenance work to greatly impact area traffic, and Reynolds pointed out that, in talking with those officials, “they hope to have the project done in two or three days” even though two weeks has been allowed for the job. “Sometimes they get in there and run into things that can take longer.”
The Bradshaw Road bridge was originally built in 1975, according to the NCDOT’s website, and the upcoming maintenance work will mark the first time the bulkheads and wing walls have had to be replaced.
“The old ones lasted about 40 years so if they can get 30 to 40 years out of them that’s good,” noted Reynolds.
The bridge is currently classified by the NCDOT as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.
An online NCDOT fact sheet defines structurally deficient bridges as safe but requiring repairs. “A bridge is considered structurally deficient if it is in relatively poor condition, or has insufficient load-carrying capacity. The insufficient load capacity could be due to age, the original design or to wear and tear.”
Functionally obsolete bridges are also safe for motorists but “need to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands. A bridge is considered functionally obsolete if it is narrow, has inadequate under-clearances, has insufficient load-carrying capacity, is poorly aligned with the roadway, and can no longer adequately service today’s traffic.”
Project details on the NCDOT’s website indicate that the Bradshaw Road bridge may be replaced within the next five or six years. Right-of-way work is scheduled to begin in June 2018, costing approximately $150,000. That work is set to be followed by construction of a new bridge the following year, costing approximately $1,500,000.
