Civitas Media launches interactive community website

October 1, 2013

Civitas Media, The Sampson Independent’s parent company, is committed to serving its communities and providing relevant news and information through multiple channels. With this in mind, Civitas Media is launching, an interactive community website, in Clinton.

The site, which launches today, features hyper-local news and information generated by community residents about area happenings and events.

“The MyOwn Community website is based on the town square, or public square, concept,” said Michael Bush, Civitas Media’s president and CEO. “As an amateur historian, I am intrigued by how communities were influenced by the interaction that took place in the town square, or community center, and how important that type of interaction still is today.”

The MyOwn website is a community-specific news, information and engagement platform driven by the most important individuals in Clinton, its citizens. “The MyOwn sites can revolutionize the way neighbors connect with each other and their communities,” Bush said.

“With today’s busy lifestyles it has become more and more difficult for individuals and families to easily maintain the level of daily interaction that keeps a community vibrant and as the leading source of news and information in Clinton and Sampson County,” said Sherry Matthews, editor and community relations manager for The Sampson Independent, “we felt we should find a solution to keep community members involved and active.”

The MyOwn website is an innovative way to find out about, and participate in, what’s going on near you. The site has been built so that the community has plenty of opportunity to share photos, videos and stories, as well play online games, post upcoming events or just see what your neighbors are doing.

“The MyOwn website is the solution the community has been looking for,” Matthews said. “The MyOwn site will strengthen our community and improve the lives of its residents, but we can’t do it without everyone’s support.”

Partnering with The Sampson Independent for the local community website is Sampson Regional Medical Center and Sampson Community College, sponsors of the page and tremendous community supporters, Matthews said.

“We are thrilled to have both the hospital and SCC on board with this. They will providing their own community-related content and encouraging others to do the same. With their help, we believe this site will be, as Mr. Bush said, the virtual replica of a town square, flourishing with activity and positive information that can be shared and enjoyed by everyone.”

Amber Cava, director of marketing and community relations/foundation for Sampson Regional, said they were thrilled to be a part of the MyOwn concept.

“We are looking forward to the launch of,” Cava said. “This will be a great community resource for sharing. We look forward to contributing health and wellness content and also keeping up with our community through the site. Interaction and conversation with our community is valuable, and we are excited to help make that possible with our sponsorship.”

SCC president Dr. Paul Hutchins said he, too, was excited about the possibilities of the community website, and believes it will be a great place for the community to come together and share good news going on.

“The college recognizes the tremendous potential for us to highlight our students, our programs and our services through the site, and we encourage our students, as well as the entire community, to visit MyOwnClinton often to share. We are delighted to be a part of this website and to help sponsor it,” Hutchins asserted.
