The Midway Lady Raiders welcomed the West Bladen volleyball team to Spivey’s Corner Thursday for the last home game of the regular season.
Before the match, Midway honored senior players Michaela Godwin, Ivey Parker, and Cassidy Strickland, along with statistician Jakeish Williams.
The home team entered the game with a 5 game home winning streak. However, the seniors would be denied on this day as West Bladen posted a 3-0 victory.
The first game had a disastrous start for the Lady Raiders as they fell behind 9-0. West Bladen took a timeout once Midway cut the lead to 15-8. The Lady Knights increased the margin to 20-11 before coasting to a 25-18 win.
Game 2 was much closer. The score was knotted at 8 before West Bladen ran off 7 unanswered points. Midway stayed within striking distance and following a timeout while facing a 21-16 deficit, they outscored the Knights 8-3 to even things up at 24.
West Bladen scored the final 2 points to win 26-24.
The Lady Raiders fell behind early in the third set, closed the gap to 16-12, and then lost 25-17.
“We wish our seniors the best of luck,” asserted Midway head coach Jennifer Naylor.
“Unfortunately we let senior night distract us from our business. Kudos to West Bladen. They came in here wanting to play. They wanted to beat us on our senior night and they played very well.”
Midway falls to 7-6 in Four County Conference play. West Bladen, in second place, improves to 9-4. The Lady Raiders will finish the regular season on Tuesday at Union.
