Mintz Christian Academy traveled to New Life Academy and they competed in volleyball and soccer last Friday. The Lady Lions overwhelmed New Life, but it was a defensive battle of equal proportions on the soccer field.

The volleyball scores were MCA 25-9; MCA 25-10; NLA 25-11; and MCA 25 -14.

According to Lion head coach Dan Heinz, MCA controlled play in the first two sets with great serving by Erynn Sessoms with 18 service points and Sydney Norris leading the offensive attack with 12 kills.

He said the third set went to NLA and then MCA finished strong in the fourth.

“Our girls played well tonight. It was another opportunity for all of our girls to get quality playing time,” Coach Heinz said, adding, “Brianna Wheeler did a nice job running the offense collecting 15 assists and 15 service points.”

The Soccer game ended with a tie score 1-all.

The co-ed soccer match was a defensive battle, according to Heinz.

MCA goaltender Cody Camp had 13 saves. MCA defense was led by Arron Smith with strong outside play by Samantha Marshburn. MCA’s lone goal was scored by Chris Mathews at the 20 minute mark of the first half.

NLA scored at the 18 min mark of the second half on a break away by Max Shafer. NLA academy goal keeper Thomas Byrd recorded 9 saves.

Heinz stated, “Our team played well tonight. They are very young but are working hard. Coach Stafford and Mathews have put a lot of effort into developing the team.”

The Lions hosted Spirit of Life Academy on Monday.
