Shawn Purvis has officially been named the new manager for the City of Clinton following a month-long search process. His selection was announced at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting.
See a more detailed story in Friday’s Sampson Independent.
Purvis has served as interim manager since the beginning of May, when John Connet formally announced he would be leaving for the managerial post in Hendersonville. Purvis has been assistant city manager for Clinton since 2008, also assuming the role of finance director in 2011.
Connet served as Clinton’s city manager since July 2002, officially leaving Clinton at the end of May. Just prior to his departure, the City Council approved hiring executive search firm Springsted to assist with the recruitment and selection of a new city manager. More than 40 people applied for the job and over the course of the last five months, those applications were reviewed, applicants were screened and interviewed and the list narrowed in recent months.
Purvis takes the helm as just the fourth different manager for the city in the last 40 years.
He is a member of the International City/County Manager Association, the North Carolina City/County Manager Association and the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). Purvis has received the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, on behalf of the city for three consecutive years.
Before coming to Clinton in 2008, Purvis interned with the Town of Hillsborough and the North Carolina League of Municipalities. Purvis holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and his Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He and wife Sara are both originally from Wilmington. They have two children, twins Joshua and Anna.
