One Sampson County man was injured following an early morning wreck Tuesday along N.C. 24 just inside the Clinton City limits and is currently being treated at Wake Medical Center. Charges, Clinton police say, are pending.

The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. near Sampson Community College when a passenger car being driven by Alfred Benitez, of 517 McDaniels Road, Roseboro, crossed the center line and was struck by an oncoming Waste Industries garbage truck being driven by a Watha man.

Jesse Ranson Vernon, 54, of 4373 Shiloh Road Watha, was unharmed in the accident, according to preliminary accident reports.

Benitez, reports show was traveling east when his vehicle veered into the westbound path of the Waste Industries vehicle, striking the truck in the front left corner. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was ejected at the point of impact.

A spokeswoman at WakeMed confirmed that Benitez had been transferred to the hospital and remained in serious condition late Tuesday afternoon.
