With the arrival of fall, Harrells Nutrition Site members turned their focus to reshing cooler temperatures, beautiful falling leaves, bountiful harvests, and dangerous hurricanes. When a storm or hurricane hits, it is very important to be prepared. Past experiences clearly show that when a storm hits, proper preparation can make the difference between survival and death.
Harrells Nurition Site members spent the month of September learning general safety tips and packing individual hurricane survival kits to help them be prepared for a storm. Every member committed to being proactive by packing essential items in his or her kit. Each kit is different and contains items based on individual needs and preferences. However, all seniors packed enough medications, clothes, and personal hygiene items to last three days.
Seniors also learned that it is important to find out how they can find the nearest shelter and plan how they will get to the shelter if necessary. In addition, they learned how to prepare and be ready if they chose to stay at home.
Participants said they hope it will not be necessary to use the survival kits or safety tips but it is comforting to know that Harrells Nutrition Site members are better prepared in the event that a hurricane does hit.
