The Varsity Boys portion of the Nathan Gay Tournament kicked off Friday night at Union High School. The first match up was between Triton and East Bladen, and ended with a Triton win, 69-45.

Union went toe to toe with Lakewood on their home court, but just couldn’t push past the Leopards. The first quarter was led by Lakewood, with a score of 14-9. However, Union rallied hard in the second, and raised their score 10 points. Lakewood powered through in the second half, and fought hard against the persistent Spartans, eventually leaving with the win, and a spot in the championship game.

Leading scorers for Lakewood were Deshaun Wilson with 22 points, Michael Smith with 10 points, Shyheim Rich with 9 points, Willie Herring with 9 points.

Coach Tim Pope, Union’s head coach, said, “I’d like to congratulate Coach Pittman and his team on a great game, they played really hard. Wilson for them was really big tonight. Every time we’d make a run, he’d match us with a 3 pointer. For us, the second half of this game was the best we’ve played all year. We’re making progress despite some difficulties, and hopefully we’ll improve more tomorrow night against East Bladen.”

The Spartans’ leading scorers were Christian Boykin with 11 points, Brandon Lovette with 10 points, Cullen Cottle with 7 points.

East Bladen and Union will play a consolation game Saturday, followed by the championship game between Lakewood and Triton.
