The Lady Spartans squared off with the Lady Dark Horses Tuesday night at Union High School. Although on their home court, the Spartans just couldn’t match Clinton’s intensity. The Horses took home the win, with a final score of 60-20.
The first half was really the highlight for the Horses. They drove through the first quarter scoring 25 points, and holding Union to score only 5 points. This streak continued in the second, Clinton scoring an additional 22 points, while Union only managed to score 7. At the sound of the halftime buzzer, the scoreboard showed a Dark Horse takeover, 47-12. In the second half, both teams struggled to find the basket. In the third and fourth combined, Union scored 8 points while Clinton scored 13. The game ended with a score of 60-20, the Lady Dark Horses victorious.
Coach Owens, head coach for the Horses, said, “I felt like our man to man pressure gave Union problems handling the ball. We’ve been working on our boxing out, and I felt like that would really be the start to playing up tempo. That was the key to the game, the girls played good team ball.”
Leading the scoring for the Lady Horses was Mikayla Boykin with 18 points. She was assisted by Kristen Glasper with 12 points, DeAsia Edwards with 7 points, Zoey Harris with 7 points.
Head coach for the Spartans, Coach Register, said, “I’m proud of our effort, our girls competed hard. Just not a lot went right for us tonight. I told the girls in the lockerroom, we’re going to have nights like this sometimes where things don’t go our way. But that’s when you have to dig deeper, play a little bit harder, be more aggressive, and have more intensity. Things didn’t go our way tonight, but we’re gonna work hard and try to rebound on Friday night against Pender.”
Leading scorers for the Spartans were Shiquilla Walker with 5 points, Tanaziah Chestnutt with 5 points, Faith McKoy with 3 points.
Clinton will host West Bladen Friday in a conference game. Union will travel to Pender Friday to continue conference play.
