Recently, South River Electric Membership Corporation’s foundation, the Community Assistance Corporation, awarded over $48,000 in grants to continue building a stronger community through schools and organizations.

“South River EMC members make it easy to live up to the cooperative principle of commitment to community,” said Catherine O’Dell, vice president of customer service and public relations. “Our members continue to support the Operation Round Up program through their electric bills in good times and bad. It is that spirit that makes our communities strong and prosperous.”

Quarterly, the foundation awards grants and this time the Community Assistance Corporation presented $5,000 grants to the Beaver Dam Volunteer Fire Department; the Cotton Volunteer Fire Department; Salem United Methodist Preschool and Child Care; Vann Crossroads Fire and Rescue; the Eastover Fire Department; and Better Health of Cumberland County, Inc. The Autryville Fire Department received a grant for $4,169.

Of course, local education institutions profited this cycle in receiving grants as well. Mac Williams Middle School received a grant for $6,523.13, while Hargrove Elementary received a grant for $7,773.52.

The Operation Round Up program has active at South River EMC since 2008, with members agreeing to have their bill rounded up to the next dollar each month. If their bill is $185.82, the 18¢ remaining will be put into an account managed by the Community Assistance Corporation. This has allowed the foundation to award over $1,000,000 in grants to the community
