A new school year is on the way and a group of community members want to make sure students have the tools they need to succeed.
Carolyn Williams-Monk is looking forward to generous community members filling up the Bearskin Missionary Baptist Church buses with school supplies and backpacks once again this year, as part of an ongoing outreach that comes around just before the start of school each year.
The annual Stuff the Bus Event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 1 ,from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A bus will be parked at Walmart, 1415 Sunset Ave., to collect back-to-school items.
“This gives us the opportunity to give kids the school supplies they need for the school year,” Williams-Monk said. A lot of parents don’t have enough money to get the things they need.”
Donations will benefit children in Sampson County and Clinton City schools, as well as children from nearby communities.
Along with other organizers and volunteers, Williams-Monk is looking forward to the upcoming event, so children can have a good start for the school year.
Now in its ninth year, Williams-Monk said the backing of the community has made it a success.
“The support of the community has really made a difference for us to do this,” Williams-Monk said. “I’ve grown up in the community and I know people always put forth an effort to help.”
She said helping others is message her pastor, Mark Powell ,always conveys.
“We aren’t helping people until we meet them at the point of their needs,” Williams-Monk said.
As an educator, she knows about some of the struggles students face.
“If they don’t have the pencil and paper, chances are they’re not going to do their homework,” she said.
With the state repealing tax free weekend events in 2014, Williams-Monk said the need to donate is an even greater one this year.
“We still believe that God is going to do what he does and that’s to get supplies for the children,” she said.
Supplies will be distributed during the ninth annual Back-to-School Celebration, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at the church, 4721 Bearskin Road. The theme for the celebration is “Set Your Sails for SUCCESS.”
“When you’re on a boat and you’re trying to find treasure, you have to know what path to take,” she said. “We want them to find the right path in school and have a good attitude about it.”
She hopes children become enthusiastic about education at a young age.
“If they like it in the beginning, they’ll eventually continue and go to college,” Williams-Monk said.
