Union and Lakewood played their first game of the football season Saturday in Spartan Country. The game was rescheduled to Saturday after inclement weather postponed the game that was originally scheduled for Friday evening.
It was a ragged, ugly game under clear skies at Union. Lakewood won the game 21-6 by scoring two touchdowns after intermission.
The first quarter went by with no team even reaching their opponent’s side of the fifty. With 6 minutes to play in the first half, Lakewood’s quarterback Zach Tanner scrambled 61 yards for the game’s first score. When the extra point missed, the score was 6-0 Lakewood, and it stood there for the remainder of the first half.
Union received the ball to open the second half. On that drive, the Spartans went 57 yards in just over nine minutes to tie the score at 6-6. The scoring drive was capped off by quarterback Nadir Goodwin finding the endzone on 4th and goal.
Lakewood then appeared to be in trouble after Union’s JP Rodriguez recovered his second fumble of the night, giving Union the ball with good field position. However, the Spartans could not capitalize, and the drive stalled.
During their first drive in the fourth quarter, Deshaun Wilson found pay dirt from 27 yards out. After he ran in the 2-point conversion, Lakewood had a 14-6 lead.
After another Spartan drive stalled, Lakewood’s Zach Tanner found Wilson for another touchdown, this one for seven yards through the air. The PAT was good, and Lakewood had sealed the deal, winning the game 21-6.
“It was an ugly game,” said Lakewood’s head coach, James Lewis. “We were not very sharp today. I don’t know if that had something to do with it being Saturday or what, but I hope we can play better than that in the future. I’m not trying to take anything away from Union, because they have some good kids and some really talented kids on their roster, they just don’t have many kids playing and they are very young.”
“I was pleased with the way our young guys played. With the lack of players, conditioning is going to be very important for us. Today we had a lot of guys cramping up from having to play so much, so it’s important,” said Union’s head coach Doug Burley.
Leaders for Lakewood include Ethan Blackwell, who had 5 1/2 tackles and a sac, Trace Faircloth, with 6 tackles, and Cody Barnette with 4 1/2 tackles.
Offensively, Deshaun Wilson had 91 yards on 11 carries with a rushing and receiving touchdown, and Dillon Kinlock had 3 carries for 43 yards. Zach Tanner had 5 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown, and went 6-8 for 53 yards and a touchdown.
For Union, Andruw Brunson had 7 carries for 23 yards, and Shyquan Brunson had 8 carries for 19 yards. Nadir Goodwin went 1-5 in the air and had a rushing touchdown.
Defensiviely, Arion Murphy had 7 1/2 tackles, Montrel Williams had 6 1/2 tackles, Tyler Murphy had a sac, and JP Rodriguez had 2 fumble recoveries.
Union is open next week, and Lakewood is set to host Pamlico, a ten-win team from last season. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. Union will travel to James Kenan the following week.
