A strong fourth quarter showing gave Midway’s JV boys a 63-47 win over No. 2 ranked Trask Monday afternoon in a game rescheduled from Friday because of icy weather conditions.
Trask, tied for second with Lakewood’s JV, came into Raider country ready to play, but Midway had other plans, despite a lackluster offensive showing in the first three quarters of play.
Coach Matthew Register said it was his team’s defense that helped the Raiders stay in the game until, in the fourth, the offense began to match the intensity of the defense.
“We really struggled offensively to begin with,” Register acknowledged. But I was very proud of our defensive effort all night. The defense took three charges tonight. That was big for us, and I was extremely proud of that.”
Despite a slow offense, Midway had the lead, at 12-10, after the first quarter, but couldn’t hold onto it during the second frame and went into the half trailing by 1, 19-18.
The JV Raiders pulled ahead in the third quarter, at 35-31, and set themselves up for a hot streak in the fourth quarter that had them scoring 28 points before the buzzer sounded.
“Our offense came alive in the fourth quarter,” Register said, “and we were able to beat a very good Trask team because of it.”
Leading the way for Midway in Monday’s game was Cameron Hobbs with 17 points. Jamarious Baggett had 15 points; Paris Smith, 14; Ayden Canady, 7; Tyler Mayes, 6; and Shyheim Small, 4.
The win moves Midway’s record to 12-5 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
After Tuesday’s game against Wallace-Rose Hill, which wasn’t called in before press time, the Raiders will face county rival Lakewood on Friday.
