The members of the 2012 Chamber Coat Closet are beaming with appreciation and thanks after a terrific year. Chamber executive director Janna Bass announced this week that the program had been extremely successful and exceeded last year’s collection and delivery, helping hundreds of needy Sampson County residents stay warmer this winter.

“We are so grateful to all those who contributed coats for this project,” Bass stressed. “Commissioner Jefferson Strickland challenged us at the kick-off to collect at least 1,200 coats. We beat his challenge and collected 1,335 coats. A total of 267 more than he suggested,”she asserted.

Bass was singing the praises of Coat Closet chairwoman Marie Daniels and co-chairwoman Sherri Smith for the fantastic job they and their committee did with the project.

“I cannot say enough about how hard Marie and Sherri worked along with their committee. They put in a huge number of hours to help ensure that all the children and adults that requested coats received them this year,” remarked Bass.

“We are so proud that we gave 41 percent of the coats this year to children ages 12 and under. All of the sponsorship money we were able to raise went to buy coats for these children. It has truly been a great year for this Chamber project,” she stressed.

Bass also stated that sponsorship was up for 2012, something that greatly helped in assisting the committee and the Chamber to reach its goals for the year.

The executive director was quick to say that the community’s support has been fantastic and much appreciated not only by the Chamber but by all the children who were able to stay warm because they have now have coats.

“Even though we have just completed the Coat Closet project for this year, we are searching for new ideas as to how to expand and make the program better and a service to more people. We encourage everyone as their children outgrow their coats this year to put them up for our 2013 drive. It isn’t that long until November,” cited the executive director.
