In recognition of Digital Learning Day students at Butler Avenue School, along with other students across the nation, participated in digital learning activities on Feb. 6. These activities varied from classroom to classroom but one thing that was consistent was the enthusiasm students had when participating in digital learning activities.
When walking into Mrs. Julie Gillispie’s science class it was easy to see the impact digital learning has on students. Every student was actively engaged in the learning process. It was amazing to see the interest and excitement in the eyes of these young students as they diligently worked to complete their edmodo assignment using i-pads. Edmodo is an educational social media tool that gives teachers the ability to deliver individualized instruction. On this day students were learning about landforms. Once they logged in to edmodo they found a classroom assignment, a poll question, and a quiz that needed to be completed during class. “Students love the opportunity to complete assignments using edmodo. They are much more motivated with written assignments when using this tool. I see a big difference in the quality of work that is turned in,” stated Mrs. Gillispie.
Not far from Mrs. Gillispies room, students in Mrs. Angela Wells class were also diligently working on their own digital learning activity. After conducting research in books and online, students completed a photo story project on U.S. symbols. Students found pictures of their symbols and narrated a slideshow telling what they learned. The project was then put to music and will be shown to the class. “The students were very excited to work on this project” stated Angela Wells. Watching the students sit at their computers with headphones on speaking clearly into their microphones confirmed yet again the positive impact digital learning has on students. It was evident that these students took pride in their work.
Just down the hall students in Mrs. Karen Randleman’s class were using SMART response clickers to answer questions on Study Island, a web based software aligned to the Language Arts and Math curriculum. Questions related to the lesson Mrs. Randleman had just taught appeared on the board. Every student in the classroom would use their clicker to answer the question. Before moving on to the next question, Mrs. Randleman would reveal the correct answer and a pie graph showing what percentage of the class got the answer correct. Students would celebrate as they found out that most of the class got the answer right. “This really helps me”, Mrs Randleman stated. “I no longer have to wonder how many students understand. I get an immediate response from every student in the class not just the student who raises their hand to answer a question.
