Editor:

With respect to the comments of Sampson County Commissioner Jarvis McLamb about the animal shelter situation, we in the animal rescue community have worked very hard to aid in the adoption, movement of dogs and cats to outside rescues, and help improve the conditions at the Smpson County Animal Shelter.

We believe that a strong positive image for the shelter is a strong positive image for Sampson County. We have no association with the Humane Society and are strongly opposed to the political agenda and interference of the Human Society and the inpact that it would have on the livestock industry of Sampson County.

Our only agenda is the welfare of the adoptable animals in the animal shelter. What Mr McLamb does not realize is that his threats of a tax on pets and shutting down the animal shelter would have a very negative effect on the image of Sampson County.

A county that needlessly kills puppies and kittens and taxes the ones that are left will have a difficul t time recruiting new industry in a modern society. I am sure that his opinions are not shared by the other county commissioners. I can only assume that he did not evaluate the full impact of his statement.

I have already written my response beneath the article online. However, I wanted to thank Lindsay for writing this tasteful letter and for pointing out that all of the Commissioners do not share Jarvis McLambs' opinions. I was at the Citizen Meeting as a concerned animal lover who had no favorite side, the County Staff has a job to do and the Animal Groups have a passion for animals that they feel is just as important. I have saved, loved and taken care of hundreds of cats and dozens of dogs in my Lifetime. I do this with the help of my Husband and no financial support from Donors or Programs. I even took the last two Shelter Cats to my own Vet to be spayed and vaccinated instead of using the Shelters Discounted Program. I trust Dr. Betty Herring who does the Shelters" Spaying and Neutering but in both cases we thought my cats were pregnant in the Shelter and therefore they needed thorough evaluations so I took them to my Vets at Caring Hands Animal Hospital. I could have returned to the Shelter and said my Vet gave them their Vaccination and determined that they are not pregnant and I want you to give them the Rabies shot and the $ 30 Spay Surgery. But I did not choose to utilize the County in that way. My choice, I do not fault the people who do use the Program. I am hoping that the Spay Neuter Program, the Demolition of the Gas Chamber and the Higher Standards of Cleaning and Isolation that were promised to the group at that meeting are soon in effect. In my opinion, a tax will not work, some people do not even feed and water their animals, some do not provide adequate shelter and to think that they will step up and claim a dog and pay a tax on it is not even within reach of my understanding. I live out in the County, I take care of my own animals and others as well as I strive to help the Shelter and I have done so by adopting animals myself and by acting as an advocate in helping others adopt. Again, my choice. I appreciate Mr. Kirby, Mr. Lockamy, Mr. Causey, Mrs. Holden and Mr. Cannady meeting with us that day, I know they have a job to do that has guidelines to follow and they have made some encouraging progress and promises. But, Mr. McLamb, you just do not seem to appreciate the furry creatures that God created, Life is not all about politics and taxes. Perhaps a visit to the Shelter by more folks including Mr. McLamb can help to prove to them that the animals need us to be there for them. I can sleep better at night knowing that I have saved lives and that the unconditional love and respect of these animals is my reward. We should all strive to have the level of respect for the welfare of these animals that they have for their rescuers. THANK YOU!!!!!
