It was a pitching duel from the get-go as the baseball teams for Midway Middle and Roseboro-Salemburg squared off against one another Monday, with the young Raiders getting the 7-1 win.
But the score, said Raider coach Steven Tyler, was not reflective of the competitive spirit that could be seen throughout the game, nor the impressive performance from the hill for both teams’ pitchers.
“It was a really good game,” Tyler said. “I wish we had hit the ball a little better, but then again, it’s hard to put the ball on the bat when you’ve got someone like Zack Tanner on the mound. He brings it. We were lucky to come away with the win.”
Tanner tossed 5 innings for R-S, striking out 10.
Pitted against him on the mound was Raider Dustin Holland, who also had an impressive game on the hill, pitching all 7 innings and striking out a whopping 16, giving up 3 hits and allowing only 1 run.
“There’s no question, it was a pitching duel out there,” Tyler stressed. “Both those guys did a great job. Tanner is a good hitter, too, but we were able to hold him to no hits.
“Dustin did a fantastic job for us on the mound; it helped us out a lot, there’s no question about it.”
Midway scored the first runs of the game in the 1st, getting 2 on the board. That was followed by a scoring drought from both teams in the 2nd and 3rd innings, with the young Raiders adding 3 more in the 4th and R-S getting its one and only run in that same inning. Midway was up 5-1 after 4 innings.
The Raiders added 2 more runs in the 6th and held R-S scoreless to get the win.
“We had a few errors, and there were some things we could have done better, but overall I thought we played OK,” Tyler said.
Leading hitters for Midway were Austin Raynor, 2-3 with 2 runs; Wesley Johnson, 1-3, with 1 run; and Austin Peterson, 1-3, with a triple and a run.
Tyler also praised the play of Adam Butler who had a sacrifice bunt that brought home a run in the game.
“It was a great sac bunt, perfectly placed,” Tyler said. “He brought in a runner and that helped us get a little cushion. That, along with some key hits at good points in the game, allowed us to get the win.”
For R-S, Josh Carlton was 2-3 with 2 triples and Brice Tanner, 1-3 with a single.
