With a new school year on the way, three community members will join the Sampson County Schools Board of Education and make important decisions for local students.

After winning the seats on the board during a nonpartisan election, Tracey Ivey Dunn, Tim Register and Pat Usher took the oath of office Friday morning. It was administered by Shurley Ray McCullen Weddle, assistant court of clerk for Sampson County.

Dunn, a homemaker, resides in the Plain View community and has volunteered for many years. She is married to Jeffrey Dunn and together they have two children who are products of Sampson County Schools. She ran for the position because she has a vested interest in county schools.

Register is a Sampson County native, currently residing in Garland. The retired educator served schools for many years and is involved in real estate. He’s married to Lynn Hart Register, a retired kindergarten teacher. They have one son, Matthew, owner of Southern Smoke BBQ. Previously, Register stated he would like to become an advocate for public schools.

Usher is a graduate of Hobbton High School and served with the United State Army National Guard and is a sales professional for Hog Slat. He is marred to Jill Usher and together they have two children attending Hobbton area schools. With children who are receiving their education in Sampson County, he would like to see safety improvements. During the election, he also stated that he would like to make sure students are prepared after graduation.

Chair Dewain Sinclair welcomed the new board members for their new terms.

“They’ve done a lot of hard work campaigning and earned the trust of their communities,” Sinclair said.

Sinclair added that the elected members will advance the school system.

Former board members Faye Gay, Sonya Powell and Glenn Tart were honored during a Monday, June 27, meeting. G.H. Wilson, who announced his retirement before the last election, was also recognized. Incumbent Kim Schmidlin replaced Wilson through a selection process.
