The Union High School JROTC held its annual Military Ball at the Mad Boar in Wallace last month.

The Mingo Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1717 represented by Camp Commander Steve Hulen presented the prestigious H.L. Hunley award to Cadet Sgt.Amber Barnes.

The H.L. Hunley award is given to an underclassman each year to recognize deserving Junior ROTC cadets who have demonstrated the qualities of Honor, Courage, and Commitment to his or her unit throughout the school year. Barnes is a second year cadet at Union and has shown great leadership throughout her career in the JROTC program at Union High School, exemplifying those qualities of the last crew of the H.L. Hunley, Hulen noted.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers founded on July 1 1896.
