‘Cats’ hits the stage this weekend

By Bruce Caldwell - Contributing columnist

You are invited to visit our junkyard stage at the Sampson Community Theater over the next two weekends, as the cast of “Cats” will present the Jellicle Ball during which Old Deuteronomy (Jerry Ezzell) will select the cat that will go to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn to a new Jellicle life.

Over the course of the evening, the cats step forward to introduce themselves and audition for the chance to be selected. You will be impressed by the cats costumes and also their makeup thanks to Charlie Knowles, Shannon Marshall and Terri Blanchard. Incidentally, Charlie Knowles is also the artist responsible for the painting on the stage floor and which is unique to the Broadway production of “Cats.” Come early to grab a seat and be entertained by a great group of singers, dancers and little acting kittens.

We are honored to have the sponsorship of “Cats” by Sampson Salvage Co. Inc. and the music by Star Communications. We thank them for helping to keep the live arts alive in our county.

Angela Martin directed the All-County (high school students) Musical “Legally Blonde” at Hobbton High School this past Saturday and Sunday . Many members of the cast are regulars on our stage and our own Sarah Day was the star of the show. Don’t forget that Angela will be holding auditions for “The Lion King, Jr.” at 9 a.m. this Saturday, June 18, and at 9 a.m. next Saturday, June 25. She will once again have her very popular Summer Theater camp Aug. 8-11. See contact info below.

It is recommended that you get your tickets for “Cats” early because we expect some sellouts. Tickets are available at Inkspot, Matthews Gifts and at the box office during rehearsals.
