Suspect arrested in ABC break-in during hurricane

A Salemburg man has been arrested for breaking into the ABC store in Clinton during the height of Hurricane Matthew, and Clinton Police Department officials said other arrests are expected.

Investigators from the Clinton Police Department Neighborhood Improvement Team arrested Edward Micah Howard on Tuesday for breaking into the business, located at 414 Southeast Boulevard. According to Clinton Police officials, the crime occurred at approximately 3:10 a.m. Sunday during the state of emergency and curfew hours that were implemented for Hurricane Matthew.

Howard, whose listed address is 1208 Bearskin Road in Salemburg, was charged with breaking, entering and larceny and felony trespassing during an emergency, as well as curfew violation.

Howard was placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under $16,000 secured bond.

The investigation is continuing and future arrests are anticipated, police said.
