Local golfers who participate in this year’s annual Partners for Life Golf Tournament will be swinging their clubs for the hospital’s operating room.
The 14th annual event, hosted by the Sampson Regional Medical Center Foundation, is slated for April 27 at Coharie Country Club. A shotgun start will be at 9:30 a.m., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. The per-registration deadline is April 13.
Each year, according to Amber Cava, vice president of marketing for Sampson Regional, all proceeds from the annual golf tournament are used to enhance an area of the hospital. This year’s proceeds will be used to purchase a freestanding sterilizer for the hospital’s operating room.
“The operating room has a standard sterilizer for processing surgical instruments,” Cava said. “This equipment is dependent on plant steam to function. There are times when plant steam is not available, such as during extreme weather events or power outages.”
According to Cava, the freestanding equipment is not dependent on plant steam to function, so it serves as a backup sterilizer to ensure the hospital’s ability to process all instruments and remain ready for emergency surgical cases.
Every year, Cava added, the hospital’s foundation hosts two major fundraising events. Proceeds from the events are used to fund projects at the hospital that are patient oriented. Some of these projects are very noticeable to patients, and others are behind-the-scene needs that are essential to daily operations and patient care.
“Last year, for example, our tournament funded a new family visitor waiting room on the Medical Surgical Unit, a project highly visible to visitors and much needed to provide a comfortable environment for families and visitors,” Cava said. “This year’s project is one that stands behind the scenes, but it will greatly benefit the operating room and better position the hospital to remain ready for emergency surgeries.”
Past projects funded through proceeds from golf tournaments include an Olympus 190 laparoscopic surgical tower, patient vanity units, relocation of new Blood Donor Center and SANE Room Sexual Assault Nursing Education for staff members.
According to Cava, in addition to the golf tournament, golfers will have the opportunity to participate in several contests, including a Hole-in-One contest for a chance to win a 2017 Chevy Cruze, sponsored by Deacon Jones Automotive and Closest to the Pin and Hole-in-One prizes on all other par 3 holes.
For golfers who register for the “Get Well Bonus Package,” Cava said there will be a chance at participating in a Hole in One shot to win $100,000 prize, sponsored by Nissan of Clinton. Five lucky players will get to take a swing in the $100,000 Shoot Out on hole No. 10, where they can win big bucks for themselves and the Foundation. Half of the proceeds will go to the golfer, while the other half goes to the Foundation.
Ribeyes Steakhouse of Clinton is also sponsoring a Hole-in-One contest, with the winner receiving dinner for two each week for one year at the local restaurant.
Registration deadline is April 13. The format is four-person captain’s choice, with the cost being $125 per person, $400 per team. The tournament can register up to 36 teams, or 144 players. Tee time will be at 9:30 a.m. April 27.
“Typically, we average 30 teams, or about 120 players,” Cava said. “We’d love to fill every team spot.”
There are also seven sponsorship levels available, from the $150 tee sponsors to the $5,000 platinum sponsorship. All golf packages include green fees, cart rental refreshments, awards lunch and an opportunity to participate in event contests and win prizes.
And it is for a great cause.
“We are proud to support equipment needs, such as this one, that improve care and provide state-of-the-art technology and service close to home,” Cava attested. “Nothing is more important than us being able to provide the level of services that our community needs right here in our own hospital. This certainly is another step in that direction.”
