DELWAY — With the beginning of school around the corner, a group of community members in the Delway community are working to make sure students start off on the right track.
The Back to School Celebration and School Supplies Giveaway is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Larry’s Carwash. Its purpose is to celebrate and help prepare students as they head back to school. Sponsored by the Cars of Distinction Club and the local Delway Community Women Group, the celebration will include a cookout, dance, games and other activities.
Volunteer Faye Murphy said it’s an inaugural event for the Delway and was made possible through donations from community members in the area.
“We’re going to see how things goes this year and hopefully, it’ll become a bigger project in the future,” Murphy said about making the event an annual event.
‘We’re trying to put Delway on the map,” Murphy said.
Murphy said parents and volunteers will be helping out with the cookout. Like many others involved such as Annie Fennell and Stephanie Barksdale, is looking forward to seeing people at the event
“It’s not going to be the largest thing,” Murphy said, “but it’s a big idea.”
To receive school supplies, identification or a final report must be presented to receive school supplies. All school-aged children may receive items as along as school supplies last.
“We just wanted to give something to our kids to show that we appreciate them,” Murphy said about helping to provide a brighter outlook for children, when it comes to preparing for a new school year.
