Following the success Sampson Regional Medial Center and the Outpatient Diagnostics Center had with offering mammograms in the evening, the duo is stepping things up again this year and offering new and exciting ways to promote breast cancer awareness.

During the month of October, the diagnostic center will host a Pink Brunch and Moonlight Mammograms.

These special events will begin Oct. 1, kicking off awareness month with the Pink Brunch. This floating brunch will offer women the opportunity to take a break from their busy day, have a healthy meal and be pampered while learning more about breast cancer health.

According to Amber Cava, vice president of marketing and community relations, the Pink Brunch is an awareness event that will allow the promotion of the Moonlight Mammograms, as well as other services available to women within the community.

The Pink Brunch is a floating event from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Wellness Center. Coordinators of the event are asking for those interested to pre-register.

“These women can come in, eat a healthy lunch, get pampered and educated at the same time,” Cava stressed.

During the brunch, women will have the chance to be treated to hand spa treatments which are compliments of Mary Kay consultant Barbara Herring, chair massages that are compliments of Massage and Skin Care by Kristie, free bone density screenings, private bra fittings and coupons from Belk, breast health education by certified mammography technicians and self-exam tips by mammography technicians and holistic health information and relaxation techniques from A Peaceful Path.

Information from SRMC’s breast cancer support group, Matthews Health Mart and Family Medical Supply will also be provided.

“The breast cancer support group is great with working with women who have been through breast cancer,” Cava said.

The Pink Brunch is a free event and open to anyone. Cava said they are asking anyone interested in attending to call Jill Cairney to register. Last year’s brunch brought approximately 70 participants into the Wellness Center.

In addition to the Pink Brunch, the Diagnostic Center is sponsoring Moonlight Mammograms every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of October, starting on Oct. 6. The center will have extended hours at the Diagnostic Center to allow women to schedule their yearly routine screening mammogram. Appointments for mammograms are available from 5-8 p.m. for a total of eight days.

“If someone is due for their annual screening mammogram, they can join us during our extended hours for a fun-filled evening,” Cava noted.

Moonlight Mammograms will offer women a chance to enter into a relaxed atmosphere for their mammogram service. There were 80 women who benefited from last year’s event.

“We are offering a pampering atmosphere,” Cava said. “We hope to make this experience as pleasurable as possible for the women.

During the Moonlight Mammograms, women will have the chance to slip into a plush robe, receive hand spa treatments, bra fittings and their annual screening. Free bone density screenings will also be available during this event. Light refreshments will be served.

“Many women dread having their mammograms done,” Cava said. “This event will make things a little more enjoyable.”

Cava pointed out that the Moonlight Mammogram event is for annual screenings only and does cost. Women participating may choose to use their insurance benefits, but for anyone who is paying without insurance, a discounted price will be offered. Insurance will only cover a screening mammogram once a year and one day after the last date of service.

Limited space is available for the Moonlight Mammograms, so appointments are required. Organizers are asking for those interested to schedule their appointment as soon as possible, but there will be a deadline two days before each night.
