It’s homecoming for Lakewood High School and before the big game a lot of excitement will take place in downtown Roseboro.
A pep rally and dance for the Lakewood High School Leopards is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in front of the Nutrition Site, 206 NE Railroad St. The community and supporters of the football program are invited to attend.
“This is to show them that they have the support of the Roseboro and Salemburg communities,” said organizer Gilbert Owens.
A meal will be served to players and cheerleaders during the pep rally. Along with entertainment from the DJ, the pep will include a dance contest. Prizes will be awarded to the best female and male dancers.
The event was originally scheduled for Friday, Oct. 2, but was cancelled due to inclement weather. Despite rainy weather, Owens and the Roseboro Nutrition Site hosted a senior health fair. During the day, he said more than 200 people attended to receive services from vendors such as the University of North Carolina Kidney Center, Kosterman Chiropractic and Sampson Community College. Fourteen vendors attended the fair.
“Everything went well,” Owens said about the event. “Despite the bad weather, the wind and the rain, people just came. They participated in all the activities and went from table to table receiving free stuff and getting their health checked out.”
Owens said senior citizens in the community were committed to attending, despite the weather conditions.
“They knew it was for them and they wanted to have a good time,” Owens said. “They wanted to fellowship with other senior citizens throughout the county. It really moved me.”
The event began with prayer and devotion and followed with recognition for the oldest senior citizens from every site in Sampson County. Door prizes were also distributed as well. A highlight of the entertainment portion included a skit by Harold Cousar, a local minster. Later during the evening, the event concluded with a bingo activity.
Janelle Jackson of Liberty HomeCare & Hospice Center was one of many professionals who enjoyed the event, according to Owens.
“I have been to many events like this, but by far this is the best one that I’ve ever attended,” Jackson said.
