In a few days, local teams will battle on the hardwood to become champions and in the process their basketball skills will help victims of domestic violence.
UCare is hosting its inaugural Charity Basketball Tournament from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Sampson Middle School, 1201 E. Elizabeth St., Clinton.
Organizer Dr. LaShawn Strayhorn, UCare chairman, hopes it becomes an annual event in the community. Strayhorn said it’s important for people to come out and attend to help support the organization.
“It’s a good community service,” she said about the upcoming activity. “It’s something positive.”
She’s also looking forward to people showing up to cheer for their favorite team. The five-on-five competition will include eight minute quarters. So far about five teams have signed up for it. Currently, the organization is looking for 10 teams to participate by Saturday.
In addition to the game, there will be raffle prizes and giveaways during the tournament. Concessions will be sold also. At halftime, entertainment will be provided by the Gotta Dance Fine Arts Center.
The cost per team is $70 and the admission fee to watch the full-court action is $5. Proceeds will benefit UCare, a non profit organization which provides resources to domestic violence and sexual assault victims.
“It’s a great resource for this area, because we don’t have a lot of domestic violence shelters or crisis hotline,” Strayhorn said. “It’s very valuable to the community and the surrounding counties …”
Strayhorn said UCare is always accepting donations. The organization relies on grants, but it can become a complicated matter because of legislative issues. She said the organization is exploring ways to raise money to help victims in the area.
“We’re trying to get out more in the community, so people are aware that we’re here,” she said. “A lot of people don’t know that UCare is here. Hopefully, they’ll come help out and volunteer.”
Along with the basketball tournament, UCare is hosting its annual Reverse Drawing in February. Recently, UCare sold concessions during the annual Court Square Street Fair in downtown Clinton. Officials and volunteers from the organization will participate in the Chamber of Commerce’s Business Expo, which is scheduled for Nov. 5 at the Civic Center.
