Gravis shares his loves of teaching

Lew Gravis is celebrating his 25 years of educational service to Sampson Community College.

“There’s almost nothing more satisfying than realizing you’re impacting a student educationally in a positive way,” exclaims Lew Gravis, as he discusses his journey at Sampson Community College, one that has led him back to the classroom. “I have come full circle and am once again a full-time sociology instructor.”

As his 25th Anniversary at SCC is approaching in September of this year, Gravis reflects on his journey at SCC, which started as a sociology instructor in 1991. In 2005 he became the Online Learning Coordinator where he managed Blackboard and a Distance Learning Computer Lab. His position transitioned in 2009 to the Director of Distance Learning. While Gravis continued in that role until the beginning of this month, his passion for students and teaching has led him back to the classroom.

During his time as Director of Distance Learning, Gravis enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to try new things and constantly make improvements within this area at SCC.

“I really enjoyed working with all of the technology involved with Distance Learning as well as with the students and assisting them with their technological needs. I also enjoyed the networking opportunities I have been afforded with some wonderful Distance Learning peers in the NC Community College system,” includes Gravis.

However, his calling for teaching and assisting students drew him back to the classroom.

“I have longed to be in the classroom for the past couple of years,” states Gravis. “I have really missed interacting with students in a classroom setting and the role of being an instructor. I am excited about being able to share my expertise in sociology with my students and impacting and enlightening the ways in which they view the social world around them.”

Gravis is currently teaching Introduction to Sociology (SOC 210) and Social Problems (SOC 220) at Sampson Community College and is excited to be a part of the College Transfer program. “I am honored to be doing something that is both fun and very rewarding.”
