ROSEBORO — A Roseboro man pulled over by law enforcement for reportedly not having the proper lights on his bicycle is now facing multiple charges after attempting to escape from deputies on the bike.

Agents with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Division stopped Brian Lee Williams, 47, of 204 N. East St., Roseboro, for riding a bicycle at night on the roadway without a headlamp, according to reports.

By law in North Carolina, when riding a bicycle at night, a headlamp must be visible. The defendant was asked for his name by agents, but “refused to cooperate,” Lt. Marcus Smith said, relaying reports.

Agents attempted to place Williams under arrest, at which point he attempted to flee. When the agents took the defendant into custody around 8:40 p.m. near Bullard and Douglas streets, he provided them with what was later determined to be a false name, Smith noted.

As a result, Williams was charged with lights on bicycle at night violation, resist, delay and obstruct and fictitious information to officer. His bond set at $3,000.
