The stage at the Sampson County Exposition Center will come alive during a thrilling performance later this month by a dynamic dance company.

The Sampson Arts Council, in conjunction with the Sampson CenterStage Performing Arts Series, will present Soul Street Dance Company April 15 at 7:30 p.m. The dance company is based in Houston, Texas and will perform to a variety of music, ranging from old school hip-hop to classical music, and everything in between.

“The Sampson Arts Council is excited to bring such a renowned dance company to our community,” Kara Donatelli, executive director for the Sampson Arts Council, said.

According to show coordinators, this high flyin’, high comedy, high energy, performance features a group of four young male street dancers who perform a special mix of choreography, filled with comic charm, to some the most popular music of the decades. The show is kid friendly.

Soul Street’s newest concert, “Breakin’ Backwards” is where bustin’ moves take on the music of decades past. Soul Street dancers perform their special contemporary mix of choreography to some of the most popular music of the decades including musical selections from Count Basie, Elvis Presley, the Temptations, Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, and more.

The Soul Street dancers will share their talents in a workshop the following day, offering a hands-on opportunity for attendees.

“In addition to the public performance, the Sampson Arts Council on Saturday, April 16, will offer a Master Class workshop that will be conducted by the members of the Soul Street Dance Company,” Donatelli added. “Attendees will be afforded a hands-on opportunity to learn the various components and styles of hip-hop, break dance and its history.”

The Soul Street performance will feature fast changing footsteps, front and back somersaults, cart wheels, aerials, and much more, according to a press release from the Arts Council.

Although Soul Street is a dance company, the performers are also actors, athletes, musicians and songwriters. Donatelli notes that the performers push the performance envelope to an amazing standard of excellence, with tremendous technical and artistic abilities, stage presence and wit.

According to the press release, high standards and attention to detail, coupled with impeccable business practices have earned Soul Street the honor of representing the United States abroad as part of the “Arts Envoys Touring Program” sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
