101 Dalmatians coming to local theater

Bruce Caldwell

Dorothy (Dodie) Smith wrote a novel in 1956 entitled “The One Hundred and One Dalmatians,” naming the canine hero “Pongo” after her own pet Dalmatian which was the first of nine Dalmatians she would eventually own.

She got the idea for her novel when a friend mentioned Dalmatians would make a great fur coat. In 1961 Walt Disney released an animated film based on her novel which was successful and had good reviews. In 1996, a second adaptation of Smiths novel became a family comedy film titled “101 Dalmatians” also produced by the Disney Pictures company. This venture had a budget of $75 million and had a box office take of $320.6 million.

You will now have the opportunity to see Dodie Smiths novel come to life on the big stage of the Sampson Community Theater sponsored by Prestage Farms and a Grassroots Grant and directed by Dr. L. J. Carr and performed by two casts of Sampson County young folks. Tickets will be available at Inkspot and Matthews Gifts.

On Wednesday, June 24, at 10 a.m. a special performance is planned for Summer Care Camps and pre-schools only (the public is not invited). Day Care facilities need to call the Director L.J. Carr at 336-1111 for details of this performance. Prestage Farms and a Grassroots Grant through the N.C. Arts Council are to be congratulated for sponsoring this popular show.

Angela Martin is directing “Shrek the Musical” with an all county High School cast at Hobbton High this Saturday May 23 with a 2 p.m. matinee and a 6 p.m. performance. This show had a Broadway run of 441 performances in 2009-2010 and has had nothing but oustanding reviews. The kids have worked hard in bringing this to the area and they will appreciate your support. Many of the cast are seen regularly on our big stage at the Sampson Community Theater.

Thoughts until next week:

The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so.

The colder the x-ray table, the more of your body is required to be on it.
