GARLAND — A Garland woman was killed in a head-on collision with a log truck Friday in a fatal collision that remains under investigation, N.C. Highway Patrol authorities said.
Jennifer Alcorta Smith, 33, of 330 West Second St., Garland, was traveling south when the Chevrolet pickup she was driving went left of the centerline and struck a log truck headed in the opposite direction. The collision severely mangled the pickup and sent the log truck, operated by Walter De Jesus Hernandez, 39, down an embankment towards a nearby wooded area.
The collision reportedly happened at 4:23 p.m., about 2 miles north of Garland, nearly three-quarters of a mile north of Norris Road, according to Trooper A.C. Westmoreland.
Alcorta was pronounced dead at the scene, the trooper said. Hernandez suffered minor injuries as a result and was not at fault in the wreck, Westmoreland pointed out. Neither vehicle had passengers. Westmoreland said there were no obvious factors in the wreck that were known to have contributed to Smith traveling into the oncoming lane.
“We’re not sure yet why she went left of the centerline,” the trooper stated. “It’s still under investigation.”
