A citizen tip helped Sampson law enforcement officers find — and arrest — a Garland-area man following a robbery in the parking lot of a Garland business Sunday night.
Derek Dean Thompson, 25, of 90 Sugar Hill Lane, Garland, was taken into custody and charged with one count common law robbery, a felony.
The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night when an 18-year-old man walking in the Garland business parking lot was knocked down and robbed of $20.
The suspect, reports show, fled and a deputy was called to the scene.
After interviewing several people in the area, the deputy was able to determine who the suspect was, but it was a tip from someone in the community that led the officer to Thompson’s whereabouts.
“The deputy went to the residence and located the suspect who was later confirmed by the victim to be the assailant,” Sheriff’s Lt. Marcus Smith said when contacted about the incident Monday.
As a result of the investigation, Thompson was charged. He was placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $30,000 bond. He is expected to make his first appearance in Sampson District Court on May 9.
