Sampson County’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) Advisory Board, Sampson County Health Department, and United Way of Sampson County are gearing up for the 15th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Rally and Health Fair. The rally will begin at the Sampson County Courthouse steps at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. This year, there will be a change in location. Immediately following the rally, participants will walk down McKoy Street to the new location at the Sampson Center Gymnasium (old Sampson High School), 808 Barden St., where a community health fair will be held.

Although this is a new location from years past, another successful rally is expected, organizers say.

The Sampson County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) provides free physical exams, pap smears, and mammograms to older women that have little or no health insurance. Physical exams and pap smears are provided to women ages 40-64 and free mammograms are available to women ages 50-64 that meet certain eligibility requirements. With the assistance of United Way of Sampson County and South River Electric Membership Corporation, BCCCP will assist over 100 women this year receive these services at no cost.

The Sampson County BCCCP Advisory Board, along with United Way of Sampson County, works with local groups to provide outreach and awareness of breast and cervical cancer. Group members are invited to local churches and civic groups to inform people about breast and cervical cancer awareness and prevention, stressing the importance of early detection of breast and cervical cancer by having mammograms and pap smears done on a regular basis. The board is always looking for new members to help with this very important mission. The board also sponsors the Pink Ribbon Campaign the first week in October, where ribbons are distributed upon request to churches throughout Sampson County.

The Sampson County Health Department sponsors the North Carolina Blue Cross Blue Shield Breast Cancer Button Chair Display each year. The chair will be on display from Sept. 23-27 at the Sampson County Health Department, 360 County Complex Road. The chair is covered in buttons from North Carolina residents that have been diagnosed with breast cancer, including a button from NC State’s Coach Kay Yow. The display also has inspiring stories from breast cancer survivors.

Organizers are urging everyone to participate in the 15th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Rally on Oct. 12 and the health fair that follows. The health fair will include motivational speakers, entertainment, booths, free food, and door prizes. Some of the contributing vendors include: Mary Kay, Southeastern Medical Oncology Center, Be The Match, Hardee’s, Piggly Wiggly, and Bessie Burger.
