Parking lots along Sunset Avenue were filling up fast Friday night, as hundreds upon hundreds of residents dropped tailgates, tossed out blankets, fired up grills and gathered with family, all in preparation for tonight’s fireworks show, set to get under way in less than an hour at Royal Lane Park.

The fireworks will be the culmination of a day filled with patriotic celebrations honoring the July 4th holiday, including many activities at Royal Lane Park.

While adults enjoyed horseshoes earlier in the day, kids gathered at the pool for a host of games that included a watermelon race. Laughter was the order of the day.

Although hot, a drop in humidity made the day more enjoyable for the hundreds who flocked to the park to listen to music, enjoy a shaved ice and a hot dog, honor local veterans and ready themselves for the main event — the fireworks.

Even before park officials lit up the night sky in a blaze of blues, greens and reds, revelers took to their neighborhoods armed with some pretty nifty sparklers and fireworks of their own. Squeals of delight could be heard at both Coharie Country Club and Fox Lake as youngsters enjoyed their own backyard fun before heading to areas of their community’s where the light display could be seen.
