A 30-year-old Sampson man charged last week with multiple church break-ins is now facing an even more serious crime, this one related to a sex offense with a minor.
Richard E. Cashwell, 30, of 65 Little Pond Lane, Roseboro was served a warrant Monday charging him with one felony count of first degree sexual offense. When contacted Tuesday, Sheriff’s Lt. Marcus Smith said the incident reportedly occurred on Dec. 3, 2013 and involved a 9-year-old little girl.
“The report was filed alleging the sexual assault. Through an investigation with the Department of Social Services, charges were able to be brought and the warrant was drawn Monday,” Smith said.
Cashwell, already in the Sampson Detention Center on the felony break-in charges, was served around 5 p.m. on June 2.
The over six-month-long investigation, Smith said, was not unusual, particularly in cases where minors were involved.
“There is a lot to any investigation, but that’s especially true when you are dealing with the sensitive nature of these type cases,” the lieutenant noted.
Gathering forensic evidence, waiting on lab results and working the case thoroughly to ensure it’s solid are all important aspects of an investigation, he said, and all take time.
“Every investigation is different; some take more time than others,” Smith noted.
Cashwell’s bond, already set at $37,000 for the church break-in offenses, was increased by $100,000. His first appearance on the sexual assault charge is set for June 6 in Sampson District Court.
The Roseboro-area man was initially taken into custody last Thursday, May 29, and charged with three counts burglary/place of worship, two counts larceny after breaking and entering, one count burglary/ forcible entry and one count possessing/concealing stolen property, all felonies.
Those offenses involved break-ins at Bearskin Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church and McGee United Methodist Church.
