A 25-year-old Clinton man was jailed early Friday morning after Clinton police, with help from the department’s newest K-9 officer, Zeusa, found a weapon and ammunition in the man’s vehicle.

Michael Anthony Loften Jr., 4740 Bearskin Road, Clinton, remained in the Sampson County Detention Center late Friday afternoon under a $200,000 bond, charged with possession of firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, driving while license revoked and unable to maintain lane control.

It was the lane control violation that caught the eye of a patrol officer who, reports show, spotted a vehicle driven by Loften driving erratically along Sunset Avenue. The officer noted that as she followed the vehicle, it crossed the right lane, then traveled to the far left and crossed that lane.

The officer continued to follow the vehicle, which turned into a convenience store parking lot.

During a conversation with Loften, the officer noted suspicious behavior and asked if she could search his vehicle. He told her no.

Two other officers, called in for assistance, arrived on scene about that time, and Zeusa was brought out. The K-9 alerted on the vehicle, prompting a search which uncovered the weapon and a loaded magazine.

Loften was taken into custody and charged.

He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sampson District Court on Sept. 30.
