A 20-year-old Sampson County man remains behind bars this morning, facing three felony counts of statutory rape, charges leveled in the wee hours of Saturday morning after the man was stopped by a Sampson sheriff’s deputy.

Johnny Cain Linquist of 686 Dewitt Williams Road, Autryville was placed under a $300,000 secured bond for the charges, and has been jailed since he was taken to the Sampson Detention Center at 10:45 a.m. Saturday morning.

His incarceration came on the heels of reports that a 13-year-old girl was missing, information sheriff’s officers received around 2 a.m. Saturday morning, said Capt. Eric Pope.

“This was initially a missing persons case,” Pope said.

But a traffic stop around 4:30 a.m. on West Roseboro Street, near Owen Avenue, quickly changed that.

During the stop, the deputy located the juvenile in the car being driven by Linquist.

“Through investigation and interviews the charges were determined and the suspect was taken into custody,” Pope said.

Statutory rape is an offense involving a minor under the age of 16, where the adult is more than 5 years older. A minor cannot consent to sexual activity under North Carolina law. Statutory rape is a Class B1 felony.

Pope could not provide further details about Saturday’s incident.

Linquist is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sampson County Superior Court Friday, Sept. 13.
