Neighbor’s call leads officer to another arrest

Yet another observant neighbor calling in suspicious activity to authorities has led to the arrest of a Clinton man wanted in Scotland County on a plethora of offenses, and now charged in connection with a county incident as well.
Jeffery Ryan Chavis, 31, of 3215 Old Warsaw Road, Clinton, was taken into custody Friday afternoon and charged with a Scotland County probation violation and served Scotland warrants charging him with two counts of burglary, one count larceny of a firearm, one count motor vehicle theft; and one count possession of a firearm by a felon. In addition, Sampson County leveled its own charges, including larceny, possession of stolen goods, driving after consuming and driving while impaired.
The two Sampson driving violations were 2002 cases, according to Sampson Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith.
Chavis was taken into custody after an Old Warsaw Road resident called authorities to alert them of a suspicious person riding a bicycle in their neighborhood, near Beulah Church Road.
“Deputies went to the area and located the individual, who turned out to be Mr. Chavis,” Smith said.
When Chavis was stopped and questioned, deputies discovered that the man was wanted in Scotland County for a probation violation, as well as having outstanding warrants against him in Sampson and Scotland.
“Further investigation revealed that the bicycle he was riding had been stolen from an Old Warsaw Road residence,” Smith said. “He was immediately taken into custody and charged.”
The sheriff’s officer said the incident was just another good example of how being attuned to what goes on in your neighborhood is important in helping stop crime.
“It can’t be emphasized enough,” Smith said. “It is very important for neighbor’s to look after one another in their communities and to call in any suspicious activity. This arrest is just another example of the difference that can be made.”
Smith was taken to the Sampson County Detention Center where he remained Monday afternoon without the privilege of bond.
