A 49-year-old Clinton man remained in jail this weekend under a $150,000 bond following his arrest earlier in the week on one felony count of first degree rape of a child.
Romeo McPhail, of 317 Stetson St., Clinton, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with the offense, related to an incident involving a child who was 9 years old at the time the alleged act was committed.
Officers noted in reports that they were alerted to the incident by the victim, now 17, who told them she had been sexually attacked as a youngster.
The victim alleges that she was at her aunt’s home hoping to get a ride to her mother’s workplace when McPhail, said to be a family friend, offered to drop her off, saying he first had to stop at his home.
The girl agreed to ride with McPhail, but told officers when they arrived at his home and went inside he took her into his bedroom and forced himself on her.
No other details were released regarding the incident.
McPhail is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sampson County District Court on Oct. 25.
