Midway was on fire Thursday night against cross-county and conference rival, Union Spartans. The Raider varsity won in 3 sets; 25-16; 25-15; 25-16 and the junior varsity got the win in 2 consecutive sets;
“Throughout the first game our kills really helped us and during the second game our serves kept us in the game,” asserted Midway head coach Jennifer Naylor.
“We had several good aces. We played hard, and we played team ball tonight. The girls were confident in the game, and we just did great,” Coach Naylor professed.
For the Raiders, Cassidy Strickland had 11 assists; Hanna Hubbard had 6 kills; Kelsey Pondo had 6 kills; Ivey Parker had 1 kill; and Amber Poole had 5 kills.
Spartan head coach Matthew Russell said his team was better than the way they played tonight.
“I feel like we just weren’t ready from the beginning. One bad thing happens and it seems to become a domino effect. I think we are better than we played tonight, but we’re going to have to step up to have a successful season,” he insisted.
Leading the team for the Spartans was Lauren Preddy with 1 ace and 6 kills. Hope Cottle had 1 kill; Eva Long, 2 kills; Carley Jones, 1 ace; Taylor Malpass, 2 aces.
Union’s record drops to 3-6 in the conference, and their next game is on Tuesday against West Bladen. Midway will be playing Tuesday against East Bladen, and the Raider’s record improves to 3-4 for the conference.
The Raider JV won in 2 sets, 25-21 and 25-17. Coach Beth Best was proud of the team.
“Our girls did a great job. We talked before the game about how we’re many members, but we’re still one body - 0ne team. They hit really well and killed the ball well. In the second set 13 of 17 attacks were kills, so we were on target,” Raider JV coach Best stated.
