Union hosted Princeton Thursday evening in a battle of their Junior Varsity teams. Union won a barn burner, 38-34.

The Spartans forced 4 first half turnovers, and built a huge lead early. Chris Murphy found the end zone twice, Dawson Thornton scored on a quarterback draw, and Nadir Goodwin broke free for a 45 yard run in the first half to score a touchdown. Each touchdown in the first half was followed by a 2 point conversion that was successful. Union allowed Princeton to score their second touchdown of the game with 12 seconds left in the opening half, to cut their lead to 20 at 32-12.

Princeton recovered their onside kick to begin the second half. The Bulldogs then drove down the field and scored on the Spartans. This would change the momentum of the game. Before Union knew what had hit them, Princeton was crossing the goal line for a third time in the second half to take a 34-32 lead, with 8:00 to go in the fourth quarter.

Union responded with lots of poise. They drove down the field 75 yards for a drive that ended with Nadir Goodwin scoring his second touchdown of the evening. This gave the Spartans a 38-34 lead.

The Bulldogs began to drive down the field in their last possession, and they were moving the ball well until Union’s Dalin Wilson, a back-up cornerback intercepted his second pass of the night. Wilson may have very well earned himself a starting role after the way he played Thursday evening.

Union would run out the clock and get the win. It was their first win of the season, improving them to 1-2. Their were no stats recorded by the Spartans.

Coach Josh Rackley of Union was very proud of his team as he said in the post-game interview.

“I was pleased with the way we continued to fight, even after they came back and took the lead. We only were able to dress 16 players tonight, so we’re very fortunate to get the win, and our guys showed a lot of heart out there this evening,” finished Rackley.

Union’s JV team plays at West Bladen next week at 6:30.
