Clinton’s defense held Pender out of the end zone, but the Patriots couldn’t keep Dark Horse Silas Herring out of their end of the field, giving Clinton its first conference win, 42-0. All the touchdowns were scored in the first half.


The first score came after a short punt gave the Dark Horses great field position. Julian Wilkins ran in from 3 yards out for six points at the 7:30 mark in the first quarter. The extra point failed.


A fumble recovered by the Dark Horses created the next opportunity for a score. Silas Herring ran in for the next TD from about the 12 yard line. Kris Royal kicked in the extra point for 13-0 score.


Then, with 45 second left in the first quarter, Herring took it into the end zone again from about 25 yards out. The PAT failed and the score moved to 19-0 to start the second quarter.


A fumble recovered by Dark Horse Kevin West led to the next touch down. It was Herring again from 20 yards out and then he manages to add 2 more with a two-point conversion for a 27-0 score.


With 8 minutes left in the second quarter, Chandler Whitfield blocked a Pender punt for a safety and 2 more points on the score board.


Less than 2 minutes later, Wade Summer ran into the end zone from 9 yards out. The point after kick was good.


The final touch down came with 1:50 left on the first half clock. Quarterback Jonathan Wright launched a 37 yard pass to Seth Harrington.


The extra point kick was deflected and the final score was 42-0.


After the game, assistant coach Mark Fields was very pleased with the way the team played.


“It was an exciting game, and necessary to get that first win,” he said. “I hope the team will be able to grow on what we did tonight and continue to get better.”


Herring was the Dark Horse leading rusher with 8 carriers for 83 yards and most of those were in the first half. Julian Wilkins was 6 for 33 and Hyson Howard, 3-42.


Wright passed 2 for 3 attempts with one touch down for a total of 51 yards.


On the receiving end was Seth Harrington with a 37 reception and a touch down. Kris Royal caught 1 for 14 yards.


On defense, Jacob Smith had 10 tackles; Roy Williams, Kris Royal and Kevin West all had 6 tackles.


The Dark Horses are now 1-0 in the conference and will travel to Raider country next Friday night.


CHS Junior Varsity Wins


The Dark Horses traveled to Pender on Thursday and brought home a 58-16 win.


Raheem Skinner had an 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Skinner had 5 rushing touchdowns and over 200 yards, including a total of 6 touchdowns. Passing the ball, Tyon Wright sent it to Jaquan McClean for 50 yards, completing a touchdown.


“I think our defense played really good tonight, I was proud of them” Dark Horse head coach Michael Bell stated.


Dre Oates had a 55 yard rushing touchdown, and three 2-point conversions.


Clinton is now 3 in 1 for their conference.


“Overall I was very proud of the team. Defense and offense did great but we still have some stuff to work on. I think we should do good throughout the season,”Bell continued.


Clinton’s JV football team travels to East Bladen next week. Game time is at 7 p.m.
