The Harrells varsity Crusaders took down Wake Christian Academy, 48-27, on Friday in the first round of the North Carolina Independent High School Athletic Association.


HCA jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter with a 42 yard touchdown run by Sammy Dixon. Zach Carlton powered across the line for the 2 point conversion. Kelly Nelms for the Crusaders would score on an 8 yard rush and a throw from quarterback O.H. Rouse to Carlton would give the visitors another 8 points.


The Bulldogs finally put points on the scoreboard before halftime, but they were still trailing Harrells, who managed to cross the goal line 3 times before halftime. The score at intermission was 7-24.


Nelms scored for HCA one last time in the third quarter with a 9 yard run and Luke Davis’ successful 2 point conversion gave the Crusaders 48 points.


WCA put 20 points on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter to make the final score 48-27.


The Crusaders had a total of 12 first downs and 425 all purpose yards.


HCA quarterback O.H. Rouse put 2 in the air. Carlton caught one for 3 yards and Nelms caught one for a 37 yard touchdown.


On the ground, Nelms carried the ball 8 times for 111 yards and 4 TDs. Sammy Dixon led the charge with 184 yards on 8 carries for 2 TDs and 1 PAT. Carlton went 3 for 27 and scored 3 PATs; Marcus Scarborough, 1 for 11; Channing Kelly, 8 for 33 and scored 1 PAT.


On defense, Frederick Strickland was credited with 9 tackles; Rooks Wells and Rouse, 7 tackles each; Ben Parker and Nelms, 5 tackles each; Channing Kelly, Carlton, and T. Crumpler, 4 tackles each.


Wells and Zach Batts were each credited with a sack; and Batts had an interception. Nathan Casteen blocked a field goal.


The No. 2 seeded 2A Crusaders will face No. 3 Christ School on Friday.
