Quincy Baggett had 18 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 blocks in Midway’s season opener to help them down the visiting North Johnston Panthers. 16 of Baggett’s 18 points and 12 of his 16 rebounds came in the second half, as Midway stretched a 2 point halftime lead into a 10 point victory, 63-53.

The Raiders started hot and jumped out to a 10-1 lead early. However, Midway made only one field goal in the second quarter as they netted a couple of free throws as well to hold a slim lead at the break, 24-22.

The Raiders would come out of the locker room with a lot of intensity, and build an 11 point lead heading into the final period, 44-33.

North Johnston got within 6 in the fourth, but the Raiders played good defense, rebounded well, and knocked down their free throwns when they needed to, and grabbed their first win of the year.

Other Midway stats include Andre Sankey scoring 14 points, dishing out 5 assist, and having 2 blocks, Taylor Calcutt with 13 off of the bench, 9 for Jordan Thompson, and 6 for Justin Thompson. Josh Minnick had 2 blocks and 6 rebounds for the Raiders.

Coach Leonard Henry of Midway was pleased with his team’s play, given that his team had less than a week to practice together.

“With football ending last week, we basically had four days to rehearse for tonight’s game. I thought we executed well, and overall I’m pleased with the win,” said the third year Head Coach of the Raiders.

Midway is now 1-0 and travels to Lakewood Wednesday evening for an in-county rivalry game.
