In three days, the Dark Horse Wrestling team managed a 3-4 start on the new season. What looks like a bad start for the team, is actually pretty good after last year’s dismal season with only two wins.
The Horses traveled to Eastern Wayne on Saturday, November 23rd for their first match of 2013-2014 at the Turkey Classic that pitted six teams against each other. Clinton came out on top with 3-2.
Teams competing in the classic were Eastern Wayne, CB Aycock, Eastern Nash, Western Harnett, Swansboro, and Clinton. The team defeated Eastern Wayne 48-34, CB Aycock 43-36 and Eastern Nash 60-21. Two loses came from Western Harnett 30-54 and Swansboro 21-60.
Two days later, on Monday, November 25th, the Horses were at Smithfield-Selma for a Tri-match which also included Garner Magnet. This time the Horses were not as lucky, losing to Smithfield 28-53 and Garner 33-45.
It is very difficult to wrestle in a short amount of time without any practice time in between to explain any changes or adjustments for the team. The wrestlers also had to watch what they ate during that weekend.
Individual wrestlers came out nervous and excited for the season to start. With quite a few wrestlers that have never wrestled before, Coach Quinata leaned on his returnees to step up for the team. The Dark Horses did not have a wrestler with more than two years of wrestling experience. The returning wrestlers responded with a flair that gave the new wrestlers hope.
At the Turkey Classic, Raysean Ford, Ty Brunson and Julian Wilkins were 5-0. Tracy Cunningham was 4-1, DJ Knowles, Jacob Byrd were 3-2, Adam Jackson 3-2. First year wrestlers Philip Snead 2-2, Jamison Starling 2-1, and Juquan Lane contributed to the teams quick start.
At the Tri-Duals, Ty Brunson, Julian Wilkins, Tracy Cunningham and rookies Kalub Cunningham and Philip Sneed were 2-0. DJ Knowles and Jacob Byrd were 1-1.
Clinton Dark Horse Wrestling Team consist of Kaylub Cunningham, Allison Gonzales, Taylor Lucas, Michael Aultman, Lis Garcia, Chenoa Emanuel, Maria Hall, Joseph Locklear, Marcos Resindez, DJ Knowles, Tracy Cunningham, Adam Jackson, John Fox, Devin McLamb, Philip Sneed, Jamison Starling, Julian Wilkins, James Carr, Ty Brunson, Ramel Vaughn, Timothy Dail, Raysean Ford, Juquan Lane, Devin McIntosh, Jacob Byrd, Caleb Tomer, Ray Deaver, Quinton Faison.
