The Clinton Dark Horses boys varsity basketball team hosted the first 2013 Dark Horse Classic this weekend with Kestrel Heights, Northern Durham, and North Lenoir high schools playing.
In the first game on Friday night, Northern Durham pounded past Kestrel Heights by a score of 85-45.
Clinton and North Lenoir heated the gym up next.
The Horses came out ready to play and quickly took the lead. By the end of the first quarter Clinton was ahead 28-13. By halftime, Clinton had increased their lead to 50-34.
The Horses didn’t let up and continued pounding away at North Lenoir throughout the second half. At the end of the third quarter, the Horses were leading 66-52.
The two teams went toe-to-toe during the fourth quarter, but Clinton managed to keep ahead of North Lenoir up to the final bell with a score of 84-73.
Clinton’s head coach, Randy Jordan, said, “A win is a win, although it was ugly. The first half I thought we played very well, but we didn’t play particularly well in the 2nd half at all. We have to learn that when we have people down we have to put people away. That’s something that will come with maturity and more planning.”
The leading scorers for Clinton were J.C Evans with 22 points; Michael Boykin, 13 points; Thaxter Sprull, 12 points; OJ Jones, 11 points; Rayquan Faison, 11 points; Josiah Pope, 7 points; Jalen Banks, 3 points; Jeremiah Pope, 4 points; Kenjuan Morrisey, 1 point.
