Four county teams were in action on the hardwood Thursday in middle school play, as Midway hosted Union and Sampson hosted Roseboro-Salemburg.
Sampson continued their winning streak that has spanned over a couple of years now, and the Raiders earned their first victory of the year. Sampson beat Roseboro-Salemburg 60-22, and Midway topped Union 32-26.
Sampson held a 37-2 lead at halftime over the visiting Leopards before winning convincingly. Leading the Horses were Marcus Boykin and Chandler Perry with 10 points each.
Austin Blackwell had 12 to lead RSMS.
Coach Todd Wheeler of RSMS said that the pressure that Sampson applied in the first half really made it difficult on them. The Horses pitched a shut-out in the first quarter on the Leps, already putting them in a 17-0 hole, which was too much to overcome.
In the game played at Midway, the Raiders led 17-13 at half-time, and took a 25-19 lead into the 4th before holding off the Spartans, 32-26.
Leaders for Midway were Carson Calcutt and Caegan Jackson with 8 points each, Colby Pope with 6 points, and Shaking Warren with 5.
Derek Smith had 13 points to lead the Spartans.
Coach Josh Bullard of Midway said that he thought his team played a lot better, and “played pretty good defense tonight”,
The conference teams are back in action next Thursday.
